Leather Patina: How a Vegetable-Tanned Wallet Changes Over Time

Patina is the change that full-grain vegetable-tanned leather goes through as you use it: it gets smoother, glossier and darker. A wallet that is carried every day looks different from a new one, and most people think it looks better. This guide explains what causes patina, what to expect over time, and how to look after it.

What is patina on leather?

Patina is the natural finish leather develops with use. Handling, the oils from your hands, light and the warmth of your pocket all change the surface slowly. Our wallets are full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather, which is the kind that develops a patina: it becomes smoother and glossier with handling, and darker in sunlight. What causes it?

  • Handling. Rubbing and touch polish the surface and give it a gloss.
  • Sunlight. Light darkens vegetable-tanned leather.
  • Time. The change builds slowly the longer you use the wallet.

What does a wallet look like at each stage?

The first weeks

The leather is at its lightest and firmest, with an even, natural colour. Small marks and scratches show a little more at this stage. See how to break in a leather wallet.

Around six months

The colour is deeper, the surface is smoother and the edges and corners that you touch most start to look polished.

A year or more

The leather is darker and has a soft gloss. Every wallet ends up looking a little different, because it depends on how you carry it, how much sun it sees and how often it is handled.

Will every wallet age the same way?

No. Each piece of leather is natural, and each person uses a wallet differently. A wallet kept in a back pocket and a wallet kept in a bag will not look the same after a year.

How do you help patina develop?

  • Carry and use the wallet every day.
  • Clean and condition it about every six months, or when it looks dry. Our leather wallet care guide has the steps.
  • Let it dry naturally if it gets wet. Do not use heat.

Is patina the same as damage?

No. Patina is a change in colour and sheen that comes from normal use. Cracking, flaking or deep cuts are damage. If you are not sure which one you are looking at, send us a photo on WhatsApp (+91 7588109990) or at hello@thepps.in.

Questions people ask

Does a leather wallet get darker with age? Yes, full-grain vegetable-tanned leather darkens with use and sunlight.

Can you stop patina? Not really. It is how this kind of leather ages. Keeping the wallet out of the sun slows the darkening.

Can you speed up patina? Using the wallet every day is the best way. We do not recommend leaving it in the sun or using oils to rush it.

Does a patina affect how long the wallet lasts? It does not shorten its life. Our wallets can last a lifetime under normal use and good care, and they have a 5 year warranty. See how long a leather wallet lasts.
