How to Break In a New Leather Wallet (Without Damaging It)
Share
A new full-grain leather wallet is firm at first, and the best way to break it in is simply to use it: carry it, open it and close it, and let the leather soften with handling. There is no need for tricks, and some popular shortcuts can damage the leather. This guide shows the gentle way, and what to avoid.
Why is a new leather wallet stiff?
Our wallets are full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather, 1 to 1.2 mm thick. This leather is dense and is not softened with chemicals, so a new wallet starts a little firm. The stiffness is normal and it goes away with use. See our guide to vegetable tanned leather for more.
How do you break in a leather wallet?
- Carry it. Daily handling and the warmth of your pocket soften the leather more than anything else.
- Open and close it. Do this gently and often, along its natural folds.
- Put your cards in and take them out. New card slots are snug. Using them a few times lets the leather ease.
- Fill it gradually. Start with the cards you use every day, not with everything at once.
How long does it take?
Most wallets feel noticeably softer after a few weeks of daily use. How long it takes depends on the wallet and how you use it. A wallet that is handled every day softens faster than one kept in a drawer.
What should you not do?
- Do not soak it in water. Water can leave marks and dry the leather out.
- Do not use heat. No hair dryer, oven or heater. Heat dries and stiffens leather.
- Do not overstuff it to stretch it. Forcing it can strain the seams and the leather, and the stretch does not go back.
- Do not fold it sharply or force it flat. Let it open gradually.
- Do not try home remedies with oils. Use a leather conditioner when the wallet looks dry, as our care guide describes.
Do you need conditioner on a new wallet?
Not straight away. Clean and condition the wallet about every six months, or when it looks dry. Our guide to how to care for a leather wallet has the steps.
What will it look like after it is broken in?
It will feel softer and smoother, and it will start to darken and gain a gloss. This is a patina, and it is how full-grain vegetable-tanned leather ages.
