How Long Does a Leather Wallet Last? What Makes One Last Years
Share
A well-made leather wallet can last for many years, and a poorly made one can wear out in a year or two. How long yours lasts depends on four things: the leather, the stitching, the edges, and how you treat it. With normal use and good care, a Thepps wallet can last a lifetime. We also back every wallet with a 5 year warranty against defects.
What makes a leather wallet last?
1. The leather. Full-grain leather uses the strongest layer of the hide, kept whole. It is dense, it does not peel, and it gets better with age. Leather made from lower layers or with a surface coating can crack or peel sooner. Ours is full-grain vegetable-tanned leather, 1 to 1.2 mm thick. See full grain vs genuine leather.
2. The stitching. Our wallets are hand-stitched with waxed Japanese thread in a saddle stitch. If one stitch wears through, the rest of the seam holds, which is not true of a machine lock stitch that can unravel from one break. Two of our wallets, the Bucks Bunny and Bucks Bunny 2.0, are cut from a single piece of leather and have no stitches at all.
3. The edges. Raw edges fray. We burnish the edges by hand with tokonole and beeswax, so they are sealed and smooth.
4. How you use and care for it. The same wallet will last longer for someone who looks after it.
What shortens a wallet's life?
- Overstuffing. Stretched leather and seams do not go back.
- Water and heat. Soaking, a hot car, or drying it with a heater can leave the leather dry and stiff.
- No conditioning. Leather that is never conditioned can dry out.
- Rough use. Sitting on the wallet every day, or carrying keys and coins loose against it.
How do you make it last longer?
Wipe it dry, spot clean with mild soap, let it air dry naturally, and condition it with a leather conditioner about every six months or when it looks dry. Our guide to how to care for a leather wallet has the steps.
What does the warranty cover?
Every Thepps wallet comes with a 5 year warranty from the date of purchase, against defects in materials and workmanship, with responsible use. Defective products are repaired for free. If a repair is not possible, we replace the wallet with one of the same value, which may not look identical because leather supply changes. During the warranty we pay for shipping. After 5 years, repairs are chargeable and the buyer pays return shipping.
Signs your wallet needs attention
- A stitch coming loose.
- Edges starting to fray or lift.
- Leather that looks dry or pale.

How does a leather wallet age?
Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather darkens and gets smoother and glossier with use. This is a patina, and it is normal. A new wallet starts a little firm and softens over the first weeks.
